Inspiration and Teachings
Keep close to Nature's heart...and break clear away, once in awhile, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean.
JOHN MUIR
We often forget that WE ARE NATURE. Nature is not something separate from us. So when we say that we have lost our connection to nature, we’ve lost our connection to ourselves.
ANDY GOLDSWORTHY
Forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair.

About
About me
What I stand for
❆ Hi there! I am Vicki Speck, a Chilean - German self taught artist living now in Cache Valley, Utah.
❆ Mostly I do watercolors, acrylics, gouache and paint murals. I create paintings in my studio and in the great outdoors.
❆ I am a former Elementary Teacher currently pursuing my second Bachelors in Technology Systems with emphasis in Design and Product Development.

❆ I aim to work in harmony with the natural environment rather than disrupt it. This means I deeply consider the impact that I have on nature and do not sacrifice its health or wellbeing in order to create work.
❆ We are part of this world and we are responsible for it. Every creature and being is worthy and deserves respect and protection within the natural circle of life.
❆ I am a firm believer that Nature is meant to be enjoyed by everyone. You don't need to be a mountaineer or avid hiker in order to be outside. In the words of Jenny Bruso:
"The outdoors should be for EVERYBODY and EVERY BODY"

❆ My inspiration comes from the connection I seek after with nature. That is why I always try to pay attention to the colors of the sky, the smell of the rain pouring in the earth, the shape of the mountains, the colors of the sunsets and sunrises, and of course..., the breathtaking night skies!
❆ I love this beautiful world we live in so I try to give it a voice through my paintings!

If you ever find yourself in Northern Utah, I’d love to connect!
If you like painting, let’s go on a paint hike!

About my Art Statement
My artwork comes from the connection I seek after with nature. My paintings are at the intersection of landscape, natural elements and abstraction. My subject matter is nature, whether it is a landscape, flora or fauna.
I am interested in capturing the world that surrounds us because I have an urge to be part of it. I am especially intrigued to paint mountains. In my painted world I visualize these massive giants that rise up and erupt in my mind as much as they do in our landscapes. Mountains loom large in my imagination because they give me an overwhelming sense of freedom and simplicity. Mountains and open plains make me feel excitingly vulnerable and at the same time they emphasize how much there is out there to explore.
Through the use of vibrant colors and whimsical linework I try to capture the serene solitude that people find in mountains. My brush meets the paper in an effort to hold on to those deep feelings and sensations that we as human beings can identify with. Mountains evoke in me a primitive feeling of belonging that is not among men. That’s why the mountains are always calling and I must paint.
My preferred mediums are watercolors, gouache and acrylics. With my watercolor kit I go outside and do color studies and take notes of the ever changing mood of the day. Later back in my studio I apply those observations and knowledge to the artwork I want to create.
Plain air painting is also something that I am deeply passionate about. Raindrops, dust and dirt are all elements that shape the personality of my work when I paint outside. Painting outdoors is something I am passionate about because it’s not only about capturing the appearances of the surface, but also working the colors and the aspects of the elements as an attempt to reconnect with nature and, therefore, reconnect with ourselves.
Watercolors are unpredictable and they force me to adopt change. It’s not about control but about letting go. This allows me to always encounter new opportunities and embrace the unexpected.
